About this project
This project was part of a larger report on multiracial Americans. The interactive timeline shows how the U.S. Census Bureau has changed the race designations available to describe oneself since the census was first administered in 1790. It was based upon a static graphic produced by one of the department's designers.
By the numbers
This interactive was one of the most popular components of the overall report, in both the number of visitors and engagement time.
