California Dream
About this project
The California Dream is a collaborative of nonprofit news and public radio outlets, including KPCC, based across the state. For this project, a dozen reporters and editors were working from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento to cover stories across the state about California's burgeoning senior populatiton and its effects.
I worked closely with the lead editor to conceive of the story topics that the project would cover and what elements might tie them together editorially and visually. Once we had a game plan, I worked closely with each reporter to gather data related to their story and to create a visualization for their story page and data points to include within their print and radio stories. I also worked with the photographer, who traveled to every story site to take pitcures and video, to map out a detailed art plan so he had a clear idea of what I needed in terms of visual assets, but he still had room for his creativity to shine through.
In the end, we were able to produce a website full of rich, compelling narratives but also a searchable senior resources page, related senior coverage and experts' predictions on the future for seniors as the fastest growing age group in California.
